  • Holding Number Two Before Bed Can Give You Nightmares?!

    .

I just awoke from lying next to one of my good buddies (no really, we're just good friends) on a futon in Boston and we were discussing how poorly we'd slept.

We were trying to figure out why and drifted off to sleep discussion in general when my buddy added, seemingly out of nowhere, "The worst is when you have to poop right before you go to bed.  I heard that it gives you nightmares."

The timing couldn't have been more perfect. Just this past Wednesday night (Thursday morning technically) I'd had a bit of a nightmare.  I'm not much of a dreamer to begin with...at least not when I sleep and yet I had a very vivid nightmare the morning in question and, when I thought back to it, I had indeed needed to use number 2 before passing out with my light on and my right hand in a book.

I was reminded of this because the only thing that woke me from my nightmare was, in fact, that initial need to poop.

One of the strangest and yet seemingly more sensible aspects of this dream was that, as the nightmare began I ventured to the downstairs of a house to drop a BM, only to find the bathroom occupied.  I returned upstairs to my nightmare (as if not being able to poop weren't enough of a nightmare to begin with) where I soon after awoke, as I was crying in my dream.  Upon waking I was neither teary-eyed nor sporting soiled boxers.  Two points.

Strangely, just a few days prior I had an odd dream (when are dreams not odd?) that involved me, at one point, using a hotel restroom belonging to Lou Ferrigno.  Somehow I was able to pee and hold the door closed despite the best efforts of the enraged former Hulk portrayer.  When I retold the dream to a friend she was amazed that when I awoke I had not pissed myself in my sleep.  Some of us are just made of finer stuff.

Have you ever had a nightmare you think was poop-induced?  Ever use a bathroom in a dream only to find you'd done the same in real life?
