We all have televisions and the internet. We've all been exposed to the weirdness of popular culture in Japan. Now, we explore:
1) Japanese Game Shows
Japanese game shows are so insane they deserve their own article. I think there's a special place in the great halls of insanity for Japanese game shows. Often American culture (especially since the horror known as reality TV has been thrust upon us) has been accused of being cruel. Japanese game shows take things to another level. There is literally one show where all the contestants repeatedly get hit in the balls. There are also rules that have no rhyme or reason, like one show where all the contestants must pretend that they are in a library and speak in hushed tones. There are weird costumes, competitions against animals, strange sound effects, pain, things you couldn't dream up in your worst nightmares. For a reference point, let's take a look at that nut shot show i talked about:
Let's just take a look at one more for good measure.
2) The Poop Obsession
Yes, Japan has a poop obsession. You might not have known this, but it's real. Travel to Japan and you will undoubtedly run into any of a number of poop products. From a golden poop cell phone charm to poop stickers to poop children's toys to poop hats. There's even poop candy. Poop appears to be a friendly character in Japanese pop culture.

3) Tentacle Rape Monsters
I think this one speaks for itself.
4) Robots
Japan has outpaced everyone when it comes to developing robots. It seems like every couple of months there's some news story about a new robot launch in Japan. This is insane for 2 reasons. One, when the robot revolution comes where the robots rise up and enslave humanity, we'll know who to blame. I knew we should have translated the Three Laws to Japanese! Second, some of these robots are damn creepy.

While I tend to borrow elements of Japanese culture, as I do with other cultures, here are some other weird things about Japan:
-The Hounen Fertility Festival: penis-shaped everything, everywhere! (as if it wasn't difficult enough to find good tacos in Japan)
-Decoden: Think your grandma's house decor is bad? At least she doesn't have a bejeweled cel phone that would make a late 1990's rapper reconsider his album cover. Also, what's the deal with those trucks with all the lights and embellishments?
-Bath Houses: In most countries, this is either an antiquity, or dedicated to the west-end of town with all the rainbow flags. In Japan, people just go hang out with the general populus, naked, despite having a bath at home.
They are trying to make up for all those centuries of wearing those samurai armoury, fierce 'banzai' expression and holding on to their iron-grip principles.
Nah. I think they all decided they can be geniuses or nerdy in a high-tech world AND still have fun.
I live in Japan & I have seen those little poops with faces on them here & there are cute animal characters & inanimate objects with happy faces on them everywhere.

I remember those Japanese game shows! haha. I especially loved the Human Tetris game show but the American version totally butchered it and sucked all the fun out of it.

I'm serious actually... What you call strange, others would call epic beyond proportion. I recently saw a youtube video of a Japanese TV show where a guy in a helicopter opened a beer bottle with the copter leg! How epic is that!

I wouldn't say Japan is insane. Just very original and pretty damn fascinating. Plus, they've got the greatest caligraphy and style of handwriting in the whole world.
The Spaniards with their bull fighting matador festivals, they are certifiably insane,imo. It's unnecessary cruelty to animals, when will the world(or in this case, the Spaniards) ever learn?
