Dodgeball is actively being banned across this great land of ours and I say this is a travesty that must be stopped. Kids need their dodgeball, and so do adults for that matter.
I have seen proof of this first hand. I worked at a
day camp several summers ago and dodgeball had been banished. Instead we played rolling dodgeball, which we played nearly every single day because, of course, it was the kids' favorite game. I say of course because it's the closest thing to dodgeball they had, so clearly it would be their favorite.
Since my time there, my brother has taken a job at the same camp and they have outlawed rolling dodgeball because some kid tripped on a ball and got hurt.
This is madness! We need dodgeball, it teaches life lessons and builds character.
It teaches you about
karma. It teaches you to be nice to other people and respect your elders.
It was part of the deal. You whine, piss, and moan and otherwise annoy your
counselors all day and at the end of the day they line you up on the dodgeball court and bean you in the head.
That's part of growing up! And integral part.
Sure, you can go around being an asshole, but eventually some one's gonna bean you in the head with a fucking dodgeball. Life lesson, right there.
I loved dodgeball as a kid. It's the best part of your day. Even if you suck it's a fun game and no one gets really hurt because you're playing with fucking dodgeballs. These big boncy rubber balls that never hurt anyone.
But everything needs to be goddamn
childproof these does. Sometimes kids need to be hit on the head with a dodgeball! They just do!
One time during rolling dodgeball, the ball slipped and I accidentally hit a kid in the head. I nearly freaked as all I could think about was fear that I would be sued by his parents.
What type of world is this where a camp counselor can't hit a camper in the head with dodgeball without fear of legal action? It's not a happy one. And it's one that isn't any good for the kids.
Where does this all lead? All this over-protection? To weak adults. Kids need to be tested. You get
chicken pox as a kid so your immune system is stronger as an adult. Same with Dodgeball.
Should dodgeball be banned? What dodgeball memories do you have?

hahah, never! it's a sport :) it's fun. lol
but sometimes..it does suck to get hit on the head :( i remember practicing for volleyball.
i was in the middle
the coach spiked the ball to the girl on the right
it hit me onthe right side of my face :(
and then he spiked it to the girl on the left
it hit me on the left side of my face :(
and then everyone laughed :( lol
Sad thing: Where I grew up, dodgeball is not acceptable, especially among girls. Balls are not meant to hit things. Wait, I don't think I have even play any sports other than... oh gee, no sports, when I was growing up, and throughout elementary school.
Then in middle school I still have no idea what's dodgeball, and of course, "girls are not suppose to do anything TOO boyish."
Ha.
I still haven't play dodgeball.
Fuck.
I loved dodgeball.
OMG!!! No dodgeball?!? That's outrageous. I used to love playing dodgeball and kickball for that matter and wish I still could but I've grown up now and it's not like it's easy to do to find people to do that with.
As kids my friends and I played a similar game except the "dodgers" had to run back and forth in front of this wall while one of use stood with a soccer ball and kicked it as hard as possible at the dodgers. Did any of us ever get hurt? Hell ya! Seriously hurt? No!
When I was in high school one teacher created this game called "mat ball" which was played on a wrestling mat with a goal at either end which was just a square done with masking tape. We used a medicine ball and everyone was on their knees. You were allowed to grab, wrestle and tackle players to the ground when they had the ball often resulting in mat burn. But the worst was when you were receiving a pass, missed the catch and got a face full of medicine ball. Were their injuries? Sometimes. Anything serious? No.
Kids these days are coddled and babied. We're going to end up with a generation of wimpy cry-babies.
How about tackling some of these bad kids, full equipment style lmao....sike naw....
Dodgeball was the bomb back in elementary/middle school. You got hit, but you got back up stronger to fight again another day. Kids today learn that if they get hit, to cry to mommy and daddy, and have them sue the pants of some poor schmo. Kids today are weak. So are some parents.
I love dodgeball. I never really minded getting hit either. It's just a freakin squishy ball. *shrug* its fun.
Dodgeball is awesome!
I dont believe hitting kids will teach them any life lessons, but dodgeball is fairly harmless. It's just a fun game.
in college i took a class called 'physical education for children', (required for my major) and one of the main points of the class was to never play any sport or game where kids can be called out, physically harmed, or there is a winner and loser. OUTRAGEOUS!!!! i had a debate with the professor that lasted the entire class one day about how ridiculous that is. while i don't think gettin' hit in the head with a dodgeball teaches kids anything, avoiding games like dodgeball does set kids up for failure and disappointment later in life. i say quit treating kids like pussies and let them 'scrape a knee' every once in a while so they can handle it later in life!
I guess my brothers right there is some thing wrong with my tree hugging commie pinko lib head.
dodge ball no automatic weapons yes
maybe it's the automotive bailout thing it being dodge ball and all.Maybe we could change the name to uzi ball don't think they are being bailed out.lol
I don't think dodge ball should be banned. I remember one of the excuses they gave me for banning it was because the 'bully's were being too hard on the other kids. I was kinda like "Well maybe if teachers were doing their jobs and watching the kids they'd pick out who was being too rough!"
But no. I know that its good for kids to fall down and get dirty. I think we're becoming too over protective. I mean, come on. It seems like the moment a kid even touches dirt at the playground the mom comes running over with antibacterial and that is NOT good. You need kids to grow an immunity to germs, if not they're gonna get sick all the time. And guess what? You cant be there to kiss every boo boo. Tripping or falling once in a while isn't gonna kill them.
Parents need to stop coddling and babying their children like this. Kids need to learn to handle things on their own once in while instead of always crying for mommy.
"It teaches you about karma. It teaches you to be nice to other people and respect your elders."
Really? I just thought all dodgeball taught us was the importance of dexterity and reflexes which can be useful if in a fight (think of the dodgeballs as fists.)
However, I don't think dodgeball should be banned at all. There is no actual reasoning for it to be either. Banning dodgeball as a recreational activity is like banning fart jokes in a stand-up routine. Considering what the kids could be hitting each other with these days, dodgeballs are safe in comparison. Plus; it's the equivalent of those nerf-bats used in aggression psychotherapy (yes, I made that field up): you throw something at somebody you hate and your aggression is gone (usually).
Everything else is as you said; it didn't matter if you sucked or not, you just had some fun. Heck, even if you beaned a kid (as I did/was) in the head, he or she would be laughing about it 3 minutes later like a kick in the groin. (as I do/would). Bottom line; the game is just in the means of fun and is usually looked down upon by the same worryworts who fear supremely subliminal (i.e. them and only they see it) satanic messages sent to kids from Kingdom Hearts (yes, the video game).
One other note; again you are correct about the immunities thing; I give my immune system a test every once in a while to see if all's good. Hell, because of that, I rarely get sick at all; though when I do, I'm bed-ridden.
You could truncate it to just people need to be hit on the head sometimes.
Some people are also trying to ban playgrounds because sometimes kids run into them or fall off or other stupid accidental shit.
I just told my wife I missed watching Dodgeball on GSN.
The only dodgeball memory I have is being hit in the head and knocked off my feet. Fun times.
I loved Dodgeball in middle school. I remember there was this Viet guy called Vinh who threw killer canon balls. It really got the adrenaline running playing against the boys.
Banning dodgeball? Are you serious? I loved dodgeball also ): I remember when a few guys in my class threw killer balls, it was fun even when you got hit by it. I think we used the same balls for dodgeball, one of the guys kicked it into my face once. It hurt at first, but I was fine after a few minutes of shock xD No one DIED from getting hit by a dodgeball, people are just worried and scared. Parents need to let their kids get hurt once in a while if they want them to learn anything. They can't have their parents protecting them all their life.
I've worked at a summer camp for the past 6 summers, and I know what you mean. We haven't banned the various forms of dodgeball or any other physical activity/sport, but since working there, I've seen that the schools have banned them. When the kids come to us in the summer, they have no idea how to play playground & gym class staples like dodgeball, kickball, freeze tag, etc. no wonder kids today are obese. they're not allowed to run around and play!
Dodgeball is the best game ever. The end.
Hell no!
I got picked last in gym class
I got beaned in the head with so many footballs, soccer balls, baseballs, and of course dodgeballs. I turned out all right, and I had a fun time doing it.
Hell, I met my roommate after both of us received injuries from dodgeball (he rebroke is collar bone diving out of the way and I got nailed in the piercings). Was either injury serious? No, and we got a friendship.
Just because there's a risk of something bad happening doesn't mean we shouldn't do it (e.g. play the stock market). If kids don't learn how to take risks, what will they be like as adults? Generation & is already cited by employers as incompetent and needy, and now their banning the things that gave us what little character we have?
dodgeball is one of the best games man has ever invented. i remember one summer at camp that i was the only person left in the game on my team and the other team had three guys left. i beat the odds. 3 to 1. then the other team resorted to cheating by switching more players back into the game but every1 knew that i won the game for my team. =D good times.
Dodgeball is THE elementary school pastime; fuck kickball.
