Sex In My City
For a while, the NYC nightlife scene was inundated with girls that had recently graduated from college and moved here from various parts of the country: LA, Seattle, Chicago, Portland, San Francisco, etc.
And they had one goal on their mind: to be Carrie Bradshaw..... or Samantha or Charlotte or Miranda. Okay, maybe not Miranda.
After a while, you would learn to spot them from a mile away.
- Usually fairly attractive.- Graduated with a degree in English, Political Science, Sociology, Art History or any other number of Liberal Arts.
- Female roommate that they found on Craigslist, about whom she will inevitably start suspecting is stealing from her or that she keeps bringing home strange men at all times of the day/night.
- Living in a part of town where I know it would cost $1,900 to rent the smaller bedroom in a 2 bedroom apartment -- even with someone crashing in the living room.
- Anything that is not Manhattan is, "scary and icky."
- Working as an admin at a finance or law firm - just until that "other thing" comes through.
- Their favorite thing to say at a bar is, "Oh, I don't drink beer. Can I have a cosmo or an appletini?"
- Always rocking the newest Manolos, Gucci, Prada, Fendi, Hermes, etc...
- NEVER, EVER, EVER reveals to anyone how she is able to afford such a lifestyle: mommy & daddy pay the rent. "My money, is my money to eat, shop and be FA-BU-LOUS!!"
- Ultimate goal while in NY? To become a successful personal shopper, stylist, buyer at Neiman, writer, fashion boutique owner, socialite, party promoter, or event planner.
...oh, and of course to meet their Mr. Big (who ultimately is just someone who can finance this lifestyle for her so she can tell her parents, "I told you I'd make it in New York on my own!").
Too honest, ladies? Well, you know that kid you knew that played PlayStation and Xbox all day, never cracked open a text book, inhaled pot like it was oxygen and claimed that he was going to become the best video game designer ever?
You remember telling him that just because he plays videos games and has ideas for video games or watches video games, doesn't mean he can actually make video games because there's a lot more to it than that and that he's just being a delusional dude? You remember him?
Well... that has nothing to do with anything. I just thought that you might want to give him a call to see how he was doing.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not hating on you (anymore). I got used to you a long time ago. Come to NYC and don't be afraid to experience it and chase after your SEX AND THE CITY dream...
Just be aware that we know "your type" and we fully know that this is how your introduction is going to go:
"I moved here from Seattle about a month ago, but I'm living in the new Trump luxury apartments right now. I'm looking for a job in fashion, but I don't have any contacts or experience, so if you know someone, that'd be awesome. Oh, I don't drink Amstel Light. Can I have a cosmo? Hey, do you know where Sushi Samba is? That's where Carrie and the girls meet for their girls night out. teehee~~~ I love that show."
If ya'll do decide to keep coming to NY, could you send some Samanthas my way? I mean, Samantha in her prime... not the Samantha of Cougarville.
Has anyone else seen these delusional women? What's your experience with them been like?

These girls abound in Seattle as well.
Some of them part time at the Banana Republic to fund their shopping and Starbucks addictions.
Working with one of them was sheer hell.
i like samantha too. i'm assuming this question was for a guy to answer, but since i read the blog, i'd like to note that i've kinda met someone like that. not really big into fashion, just liked to talk big and spend a lot of their parent's money. real snobby type. and personally, i think the NY scene is a little overrated. i like my little Fresno
Yeah - show sucked, characters sucked, writing sucked, ethics sucked . . . "Sex in the City" = big, giant suck fest.
@SwordAndSacrifice@xanga - i disagree.
can i just say that the 4 women on satc were not delusional, they were in fact very successful
to answer the question, i dont think ive met any of these delusional girls but that may be because im still in college
i see people who look like that and act like that on the train all the time
I can't say I ever met someone like that. But if I ever did, I would run the other way.
Whenever I run into them, which isn't very often, I just nod my head and smile. Let them talk talk talk, and then leave after about a minute
you know what, the list you just made is VERY LIKELY to be true (especially coming from a school full of Caucasian rich people/girls) , BUT it is not at all anything related to Sex and the City.
Those characters actually work hard (more on Carrie, later) and though their careers may seem a little TOO amazing, it's still plausible.
On the other hand, Carrie, I believe is kind of like those girls you mentioned in NYC. I still think that Big was just the rich guy who swept her off her feet and on the side, financed the actual living part of her life, whereas her writer job financed the materialism part of her life. Part of me is slightly erred by that fact...nonetheless, I LOVE SATC. the end.
