  • Video Games, Are They A Waste Of Time?

    Video games.

Play these things too much and you are taking away precious moments of your life that could have been with ones you love.  Or perhaps you could be playing the most intense game and winning but there goes your life miserably down the drain.

I love video games but I don’t completely waste my time on them.  Some of my favorites are Left4Dead, The Ship, and Dance Dance Revolution (I cant dance without the arrows).

Sometimes I go through phases where I can't stop playing a game, (hence the blisters on my feet from playing Dance Dance Revolution.)  However, then I go through another phase where I won't play games for an extended period of time.

An advantage of my online games (Left4Dead and The Ship) is that in a way you are actually interacting with other people.  The program involved with these online games is called Steam.

It comes with many online games so you can play well, online.  You can also add new friends and make your own profile page.  The people could be your best friend that live right down the street or someone you have never met that is on the other side of the world.

You can have very, very interesting conversations with the new people you meet, trust me on that one.

Video games also can help build fantastic eye and hand coordination which helps in everyday tasks such as playing a sport, or ducking before someone punches you straight in the face.

They are also a great way to take out your anger.  For example, just sign on to the game Left4Dead and ferociously shoot every zombie in sight and voila!  Angry no more grumpy pants.

Are video games a waste of time? Do you play the games online or on a gaming console?

I think they are okay if you are playing them when you have nothing to do.. because then you're actually doing something with your time. xD

But if you should be doing something else, then yes, video games are a waste of time.

I love DDR! & My guy friends are always talking about L4D but I don't know how the hell that works nor have I ever tried it.

As long as it's fulfilling to you, it's not a waste of time.  However, that doesn't mean that the time is not better spent elsewhere...it just depends on your priorities.

No. They're not a waste of time. I use it to relax on during my study breaks when my LDR isn't available for obvious reasons.

@QuantumStorm@xanga - lol I think your picture proves your point.

And on topic, what the heck? Everybody knows games aren't wastes of time or else every hobby in the world is a waste of time also.  Lord knows listening to rap music is a waste of time (yes I went there). ^_^

    TWEWY FTW

@fancykong@xanga - Lol, you're one of the few who recognize my profile pic I love that game, and that CO (apart from Sturm) is one of my faves.

I think it is, yet I am super guilty for playing everyday. T-T

rotfl my science fair project is about video games and hand-eye coordination XD

It can be addicting.  I play games sometimes constantly...then others I can't even bring myself to turn on my ds much less click on wow or turn on the 360.  My boyfriend has every system.  I play on all of them.  I enjoy video games.  They are apart of my life but they aren't my life.  My friends and I use it as our past time...but when you are a photographer (me)  you get more free time then some others during down times.

I also admit I had an addiction.  My boyfriend admits to an addiction but getting him to drop warhammer is proving pretty difficult, when he bought 6 months of time. >.>

Old school console gamer. I play lots of SNES, Genesis, PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, GBA, DS, and on occassion NES games. Heck I'll import games too. It's all about that Street Fighter IV! I also play Dance Dance Revolution and Stepmania with a cobalt flux. I played DDR in the arcade and have gotten AA on MAX 300, Matsuri Japan, MAX Unlimited, Tsugaru, and many other songs in Heavy mode. Gotta say, to this day, I can't beat Paranoia Survivor MAX Oni... Yes I'm a disgrace for someone who can beat MAX 300, MAXX Unlimited, and the Legend of MAX back to back...

To answer the original question... I'll admit, they're a waste of time for the most part. However, it's good to have something to relieve stress on. It's also good to build certain reflexes and coordination. Like my girlfriend's good at Resident Evil but sucks at Super Mario Bros 3. When she saw how I almost never lose lives in SMB3, she lost her competitive spark in that game by the 2nd or 3rd world. I literally lost only about 4 or 5 lives by the time we got to the 7th world. She quit in the middle of the 6th world. Also, the only world we skipped was world 7, because she wanted to see me beat bowser real quickly. I beat the entire world 8 without losing a life and killed Bowser... I still suck at the game compared to the guys who actually choose to save state or memorize levels and tricks though. Definitely a waste of time by that point. DDR was better since it at least gave exercise to gamers who hated going to the gym.

    Cheers!

well i play guild wars...an online MMRP....i've had the game over a year and spent a lot of time on it these last 4 months because mainly it's winter and there's not anything else to do. all winter.....this is what's been going on....my ps2 broke so no more movies (that was a sucky one) and no more god of war, tony hawk games, devil may cry ect.... i was like shit...now what do i do? so i finally picked up guild wars and started playing....it's been a fun few months but now i'm sick of it. i've made some great friends. i have my own guild with over 70 people and own an alliance as well with 9 other guilds so all together we got about 700 people....so that's a lot of people you can interact with. not to mention all the random people from other guilds you meet in towns. met all kinds of people from around the world so i can't say i was bored. i've been looking for a job for about 6 months now and have been studying for my college classes since the new semester started.

now that it's starting to get a bit nicer outside i've pretty much dumped the game again till next winter....haven't played it for 2 weeks until earlier today i played it for an hour to catch up with old friends and spend some virtual $$ on pixels. so no i don't think games are a waste of time....they're great if you're bored and have nothing better to do. but there's a time and place for video games. hey...i'm buying another PS2 soon just so i can watch movies again! i'll probably cave in and play god of war since i haven't played it at all in a good 7 months or so.

damn i think this is the first serious response i've ever written on here.....and ohhhh shit i'm adding a mini!! with the billion credits i have lol.

I am a 'gamer' but it's a hobby just like anything else, and definitely not a waste of time. Personally it served as a way to escape when I was young, lol, still does. It, however, by know means controls my life, and that's the key. Like some people here are saying...you don't want to get too crazy with it, but that's with everything in life, unless, I guess, if you're getting heaps of money to do it. :)

  • Doubledb@xanga

Games are fine.. it is not being able to live without them that is crazy. I usually play a game or two then stop for a while. I cannot spend more than an hour or so playing games most of the time, unless I have a free weekend and just play for a long time... but what gets me is when people have girlfriends or boyfriends or spouses and blow them off for games - that is something I would NEVER do. LAME! ha ha
