  • No More Anonymous Calling, But Is That A Good Thing?

    QOTD

Gone are the days when you can stalk someone through anonymous phone calls or prank a friend just because you were bored out of your mind (come on, you know we all did at some point), because TrapCall, a new service  offered by TelTech, plans to get rid of anonymous calling once and for all.

Basically the service unmasks the blocked number and then allows you to blacklist is in case they try to do it again. The basic service is free.

Some are praising this new service but domestic violence victims are against it, especially those who share custody of their kids with their abusive partner.

Is this new unblocking service a good thing, helping individuals monitor who's calling them?  Would you want this new service on your cell phone?

If it puts people like that at risk, I say no.  It's never been a problem for me and I can always change my phone number.  They might have to move.  It'd be a bitch to change my number, but I'm sure it's a bigger problem for them if their abusive partner knows where they live and comes after them, or if they move.

Kind of a cool idea, but it's not important.

It is cool, butagree that if it can be dangerous it is not worth it.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought about that, but that's a VERY good point. I suppose people in that situation could buy disposable cell phones or use phone cards.

There's definitely times I wish I had something like that, but if it means that people would be in danger, then I really don't need it at all.

I think that if people are paying for a protected phoneline, that you shouldnt be able to see what number they are calling from to be able to protect those people. But otherwise, its just a luxury.

Man, my mom is going to get this, she's psyhco.

I don't think its worth it if it puts people in danger.  I really don't need it, and I don't intend to get it.  I am very selective about who I give my phone number too, and I have never had a problem with strange anonymous phone calls.

I can see a certain advantage of this.  I have heard about people who get threatening calls or texts from blocked numbers.  This would probably make them feel more safe and really cut down on anonymous Cell-stalkers.

I guess I can see there would be advantages and disadvantages to this.  It will be interesting to see what comes of all of this.

I feel like this could be useful, but there should be a domestic violence victims' registry whose numbers can never be unblocked by this service.  The same goes for law enforcement and government officials who have government-owned phones - those numbers cannot be unblocked.  My mother works workers compensation and often calls her patients from her cell phone.  She, too, should be able to block her number.  A lot of times, people who block their numbers do so for a good reason.

With that said, though, this system should instead record the number of calls made by these blocked numbers.  No investigations would be undertaken unless someone complains that a blocked number has been prank calling/threatening them.  This way, people could still have the safety of a blocked number and the ability to report the abuse of that blocked number.

So it could be useful, if they tweak the system a little.
