I was talking to one of my friends and the subject of alcohol came up (it always does). I mentioned my favorite drink these days was either sipping on a nice cognac, sake with good sashimi, or pounding
Jameson.
He asked, "what about
soju?", and I explained, "soju and I have a love/hate relationship; I love soju when I'm drinking it, but the next day I fucking hate it".
My other friend chimed in, "at least the hangover isn't as bad as when we used to drink Goldshlager". (vomits in mouth) Even thinking of that shit makes me queasy.
This conversation reminded me of all the God awful shit I used to drink growing up. The shady runs to the liquor store in Little Saigon (we would give them an extra $20 because they never carded us)... I miss those days.
Age: 12 to 14: Budweiser
This was my first experience with alcohol. I think my uncle gave me some when I was around 11-ish and I remember thinking that it tasted like ass.
This was the only alcohol available to me at an early age, my dad used to buy the 24 packs at
Costco/ Price club a loooooong time ago. I'd steal a six pack here and there and drink it with with my friends.
After a while I think he figured out I was drinking his alcohol so he started counting the cans. As ghetto as it might sound, this stuff isn't really that bad. I can see why people drink it. It's cheap, tasty and you got to love the Spanish writing on the can.
Age 15 to 16: OLDE ENGLISH 40oz.Ah yes, piss in a bottle. As bad as this stuff tasted, I have fond memories of it. I was in the midst of my "thug life" days and this drink was a rite of passage.
I remember the first time I was able to down an entire bottle, it was a huge achievement; all my friends applauded. I violently vomited 3 minutes after but it was still a great day.
Age: 17: Goldschlager With the exception of
Bacardi 151, this shit is quite possibly the foulest shit ever concocted. Gasoline. With the discovery of a teenage "friendly" liquor store in Little Saigon, we began to experiment with all sorts of shit.
We came across this filth because quite honestly, the gold flecks intrigued us.
I remember I was playing "doorman" at a house party and I got the idea to make everyone walking in drink a shot. I thought it was a good idea, and it got everyone in a good mood.
That was until this one girl I thought was cute walked in. I handed her a shot and tried to strike up a conversation as she pounded it. She handed the glass back to me and threw up on the coffee table. Sexy.
Age: 17 to 18: Lemon Soju (Picture of a random Asian guy)
By this time we had found all the Korean teen "friendly" drinking spots in LA and Garden Grove. Lemon soju was new and everyone was drinking it.
You know the saying, "it's too good to be true?", well this is a prime example. Everything is fine and dandy going down, everyone has fun while drinking. But the next day...THE WORST HANGOVER EVAAAAAAR!!
Age: 19 to Present: Crown Royal The old staple. I remember watching my dad drink this stuff on the rocks, now I pound it at the clubs. Actually, I don't go clubbing all that frequently anymore, but still I can drink this like water.
This shit has got to be 99% of the reason Korean guys are getting laid. Thank you Crown Royal.
Age: 20 to 23: Jose Cuervo/PatronSick of getting full with no buzz on beer, we jumped into the realm of tequila. It was a bit intimidating at first because I had heard the stuff is foul, but a couple of my friends convinced me to take a shot.
The first time was painful, the taste is hard to describe. But I got used to it, and it became my drink of choice. Of course Cuervo had to go, and I upgraded to Patron Silver, and around the same time I was introduced to sexy world of Body Shots.
Tequila somehow made girls think that it's okay to have a guy lick salt off your neck and/or chest. Body shots anyone? ARRRIIIIIBA!!
Age: 21 to 23: "Adios Mother Fucker" aka. AMFI drank this the first time I went to a non Korean establishment. I think the first "White" bar I went to was Miyagi's in Hollywood. It was fun, I drank these all night because I liked the name.
The waitress would walk up, "what would you like hun", I'd say half giggling, "Adios MUTHA FUKKA". How lame am I?
Anyway, this drink gets you buzzin good, but one really strange downside. The blue dye in this drink made your poop funny colors. I guess it could be because I drank like 10 of them; but still if you ever have a night where you drink at least 3, take a look at your shit the next day, I swear it's trippy.
Age 21 to Present: Soju or "Kkang soju" (plain soju)I drink this cuz it's cheap and it gets you FADED. At first I really hated the stuff because it tasted like rubbing alcohol.
After a few years of diligently drinking it, I began to realize, I may never actually like the flavor, but it goes well with some types of food.
Spicy food, sashimi, Korean BBQ to name a few. I probably drink more it than I care to admit. Whenever I'm hungover on a Thursday, you can almost bet it's because of soju.
Age: Present: Sake So if you don't know by now, I'm a HUUUUUGE seafood fan. I like to have sashimi at least once a week. An expensive habit made more expensive by my love of good sake.
The one pictured above is among one of the finest and my favorites, Kubota Manjyu. Only found in sake bars and fine Japanese establishments, will run between $100 to $200 per 720 mL bottle.
The gap in price is basically because some restaurants want to ream you. Makes my mouth water thinking about it.
I've left out many different drinks because, quite honestly, I'm too damn lazy and I've spent too much time on this post already. I haven't mentioned my love of a good Pinot Noir or a crisp flavor of a chilled Sauvignon Blanc, that is a post in itself.
Care to share your your drinking evolution or favorite drinks? Does it come with any interesting drinking stories?

I remember reading this post several months ago.
@wherethefishlives@xanga - yeah it's aged kind of like a good bottle of wine... you see where I'm going with this right?
That was a big list. Hahahah. I usually enjoy nice light beer (preferably Kirin, Asahi, or Heineken or any Asian beer) and some sake. Soju is not really all that interesting to me. I stay away from hard liquor because it does horrible things to me. And wine coolers give me horrible chest pains.
I didn't drink til I was 18, and then I started on fruity low alcohol count type stuff like Mike's hard lemonade and Smirnoff malt liquor, with the occasional glass of wine. Then I moved almost entirely into mixed drinks, with occasional shots, whatever was cheapest at bars. Then I had a bad experience with some really fruity mixed drink bar and a bad case of gut rot and haven't really been able to get back into those types of drinks. I now drink almost strictly beer, with my two favorite kinds being on the opposite ends of the beer spectrum: Spotted Cow and PBR. Haha. If I do have a mixed drink it's probably Gin and tonic (yeah, old man drink I know, but only thing I can seem to stomach). Everytime I have wine I usually overdrink and am sorry the next morning, so I'm even steering clear of wine lately. In our freezer we have half empty bottles of: Kahlua, UV Blue, Montezuma aztec gold, Gin, and canadian mist. But these have all been sitting there since summer, which shows you how often we actually drink liquor these days.
And yeah, goldschlager is nasty stuff.
I never went through an evo process. I didn't drink until I was 18, seven shots of Yagers, jumped into a hot tub, and that was it. The next stage was after I started working at a restaurant, still underage, and developed a thing for Long Islands, aka: sex in a bottle.
from steel 211 and cobras - (the crack head beers)
to nights out with 151
to sex on the beaches and appletinis and yogurt sojus
Really cool entry. Never seen a post about alcohol on Xanga before.
Buds -> Coronas -> 211s -> Bud light
Hennessy -> Crown -> Paul Masson
Taaka -> Aristocrat -> Pearl -> Grey Goose -> Belvedere
I just drink anything that's available. I kinda like Goldshlager, but then again I have a sweet tooth.
age - 18 to 19: bitch beer, smirnoff, mikes
age - 19 to 21ish: vodka, tequilla, bicardi, rum....basically any sort of liquor.
age - 21ish to present: jack daniels, shots or with coke. it's the only way to go.
^_^
i had my first teenage drunken night at 16 during the summer. I drank coors light. I was so trashed after 4 cans. hahaha. that's how i met my 2nd boyfriend.
I've had bad/good experiences with soju. It got me really plastered after 5-6 shots .
My favorite of all drinks is captain morgan. hahahaa
oh and jack daniels! hahaha my 2nd favorite. SO GOOD with coke.
I FUCKING HATE CROWN ROYAL.
ugh, looking at it makes me gag. i got too fucked up at a church camp. lol
E&J IS GROSS. TOO.
i actually got real fucked up on tequila..and jose cuevo..and LOL..
OE sippin' on a 40 lol thug life baby
Hmm... I've had many brands of beer... Lots of sake... then went to AMF and Sex on the Beach... Went with patron, grey goose, and smirnoff for a while.
I think ultimately I stuck with the following list:
Heineken, Tsingtao, Sapporo, Guinness, Bailey's, Irish car bomb (dropping a shot of Bailey's into a half full glass of Guinness for me), AMF, Soju, and Sake.
Out of that list, the ones I drink most often are Guinness(80% of the time), Irish car bomb(10% of the time), and sake(5% of the time). That's in order too. I drink only a handful of times a month. Sometimes I'll go months without drinking.
I've never cared for beer except for Heineken.
I love mixed drinks though, and Jack Daniels is pretty great too.
"Goldshlager"
Yech. 2X.
"That was until this one girl I thought was cute walked in. I handed her a shot and tried to strike up a conversation as she pounded it. She handed the glass back to me and threw up on the coffee table. Sexy."
Lol! I've got tears man. -Sorry still laughing...
Tequila I like. But you gotta be careful with that stuff. Though I seem to have a degree of tolerance for it more than I do with other liquor.
Soju, never tried it.
Mixed drinks I like too much. Gotta watch myself.
Sake I like, especially with seafood. haven't had the money to try any really good stuff yet though.
I like Merlot, Shiraz, or Chianti. -Not with liver though.
I like Goldschlager for breakfast, lol.
Hate beer, f'in disgusting...
Straight liquor kinda girl, no rocks, no mixers, no chasers.
Guiness Stouts and White Russians for me, my drinking tastes go along the lines of The Big Lebowski. Not much else. Though I am actually fond of a shot of Goldschlager here and there. Not more than a shot of it though. That stuff has a kick.
I started with tequila when I was 15. If I had more money that's probably what I would go with. I also drank a lot of Canadian Club back then too.
I drank basically the same thing until I was about 17. Then I started to like beer, and coolers because they tasted good. I also liked the cheap rums.
Now I'm back to vodka at age 19 if I do drink. I just get cheap stuff because still I am poor haha. Polar Ice for the win. I like to mix it with juice until I can't taste the juice then I just do shots form the bottle to avoid spilling.
1. macallan 30 y/o single malt (group orgy in yo mouth!).
2. onigoroshi daiginjo sake (prefer this over manjyu).
3. johnnie walker blue (mere mortals drink black).
4. opus one cabernet (to hit the classy ass).
god i love alcohol.
beer and tequila are mexican choice of drinks.
i grew up drinking Russian though;
a lot of vodka, a lot of dancing. a lot of crazy good times.
15-17 was punctured with bitch beer whenever available, and cheap vodka here or there.
17 right before 18 was when i started goin raw. i began hanging out with a rather salty bunch and nights before graduation were filled with 12 oz cans of miller high life and shots of tequila here or there. once summer happened, it was over. i moved on to 32s of high life and shots of smirnoff vodka most nights. standard. there was one guy and one girl that both had fakes and therefore made most liquor easily accessible. my first time throwing up was actually as a result of this on my birthday from too many shots mixed with too many screwdrivers mixed with a bittersweet breakup with my high school sweetheart of two years. but i had my boys, and that's all that matters.
first semester of college (or "purging phase" of the Twelve-Month Hangover That Was 2008) were dedicated to 40s of mickeys and cheap champaigne i could easily obtain from a gas station a friend of mine worked at. classy, right?
then i transferred to school in austin and now it's bacardi limon, jello shots, and blue moon kegs here on in. the beauty of it is i don't have to pay for jack SHIT now that i'm in a town run by college kids.
16 to now, which is 17: smirnoff, jose cuervo, captain morgan, crown royal. not that big of a beer fan.. but ii like corona (:
