  • Why Can't We Get Beer at the Movies?

    Guest blog by Lesabre500

There are many places where you can enjoy a cold one but I have never heard of any movie theaters having beer available. Why not?

Wouldn't it be nice to have a big bucket of popcorn and a cold beer while you watch a movie?

Years ago there were drive-ins and people could enjoy a movie, have privacy and maybe even indulge in a beer if they felt like it.

Sitting in the privacy and comfort of your own car or van was a great way to spend a night on the weekend.

The invention of DVD's and newer technology has pretty much killed all of the drive-ins in the world.

How many romantic moments, great movies and popcorn have gone to waste with the destruction of the Drive-In?

Sitting in front of a movie screen 60 feet wide, 30 feet high, listening to the wind and the other sounds outdoors can be entertainment in itself.

Even the lowly station wagon could become a place where nerds and geeks found true love and see Star Wars at the same time.

Being tied down to a TV or other sources of video entertainment can be very limiting.

Ask anybody that has been to a drive-in lately. I'm sure they've had a lot more fun.

Do you think technology has taken away the movie experience of yesteryear? Would you have a problem with movie theatres serving beer, or is soda bad enough already?

Really? I know of a few movie theaters where I live that sell beer and wine. But that is only at the art-house film theaters like Angelika theaters.

  • abcxunt@xanga

probably because of all the underage shits who try and pawn off liquor. that would be fantastic though.

the only drive-in theatre i know of is in wisconsin.
  • jms2508@xanga

theres a drive in near where i live. its so cool..

and there is a movie theater ive gone to a few times that serves beer haha

  • simply_steffy@xanga

We still have a drive-in theater here.

  • hexogen@xanga

I don't know about anywhere else, but here in America, we don't serve beer at movie theatres because we just don't.  It would be un-American.  We were the ones who had that brilliant prohibition idea, remember?

I think it would be nice to have a glass of wine or something while watching a movie.  That's what rentals are for, though, I suppose.

@abcxunt@xanga is right, though, probably because a large demographic of movie theatres is underaged.

I'd much rather watch a movie, which I paid more than $7 to see, without any interruptions from any boozing spectators. I'd go to a ball game for that... except I wouldn't really, just hypothetically speaking.

  • The_Wandering_Coyote@xanga

There are movie theaters by me that serve beer and your right it is fantastic sometimes.  Though as you can imagine it is ridiculously expensive.

  • SerenaDante@xanga

I'd kinda prefer not to have drunk people in theatres... if you want to have a beer with a movie, rent one and buy a case.

  • brickmelinda@xanga

Cause people would be louder than normal! Get into fights, fall over, go just to drink....it would be a disaster.

  • malissa1578@xanga

Because people can get overly obnoxious when they drink and watch movies. I would l think it would detract from other peoples experiences at the movies as well. People would go back over and over again.

  • my_final_username@xanga

I think one of our local cinemas serves beer.

  • heatherxkennedy@xanga

There's a movie theater where I live where they serve a meal and beer (if you want one) while you're watching your movie. It's not a very "high class" place either.

Go to studio movie and grill.

    Few reasons why:

    1) Many theatres don't want to go through certifying their mostly underage staff to legally serve alcohol. While some theatres do, the typical drinks sold are weak products like daqaries (sp?).

    2) It's America, people can't handle their alcohol. You start selling beer at a theatre, and the odds are pretty high that you'll turn it into a bar real fast, with people talking MORE then usual, laughing loudly at ANYTHING, and possibly having more fights break out.

    3) Similar to number 2, it's America. Kids will try to "be cool" and challenge the system to get alcohol they're not allowed to be drinking. The real question, where's the parents, will never be asked. It will be replaced with, "Why wasn't the theatre prepared for a teenage delinquent?"  While this might be the whole reason for having rule #1, it's ridiculous that we're the only country which acts so childishly over alcohol. It's so bad it even drives kids to go through illegal means to get. Sad.

    4) It's just cheaper not to. American theatres suck, atleast from the cities I've been to. Currently I work overseas, and not only are the theatres MUCH cheaper, but the selection of stuff they offer ((including beer)), the cleanliness, and the technology they use are just so much better the the US it's not even funny.

Finally, about the drive-thru's, DVD's didn't kill those. Corporations looking to fatten their wallets did. Why bother with a drive-thru when you can trap triple the amount of people in a small theatre where you can charge ridiculous prices for relatively cheap food products that people WILL pay. This has been the American way of business for a long time.

  • coolmonkey@xanga

They don't serve beer in movie theaters because it's too easy for minors to pay off some guy to buy them alcohol.  If that happens, the theater would get sued out of business.

  • figachewy@xanga

NOT IN AMERICA. That would open the opportunity for too many drunk degenerates at the movies. Also, I think the concept is a bad idea: people would end up missing 1/4 of the movie going to the bathroom.

You have obviously never been to the Moolah Theater just down the street from St. Louis University.

On the floor level most of the seats have been replaced with big leather couches, and outside there is a full bar, and you are allowed to bring your drinks inside.

My best movie experience was in September when Friday's Midnight Movie was "Ghostbusters" and I won free beer.

So there I was, sitting on a big leather couch, drinking free beer and watching one of my favorite movies. It was wonderful.

There's a place called Hollywood Boulevard in Woodridge, Illinois that serves alcohol and food while you enjoy a movie (there are tables and waiters, etc).
    www.atripothemovies.com
However, because alcohol is served, guests must be 18 or older.  Everyone was well-behaved and quiet during the movie except for appropriate laughter (it was even during Superbad, too).

It's also lovely to see a movie without the inevitable child screaming in the theater.

  • BaLob@xanga

if there was beer in all theatres, I would say "don't trust that bitch" even more.

  • AdveniatRegnumTuum@xanga

There are movie taverns (that's the actual name of a small chain in DFW, not sure if it's anywhere else) I've never been, so I don't know how much like a real theater it is, but if you live in a city, look around, you probably have something like it.

  • doraemonxo@xanga

    Alamo Draft House, baby.

  • mayanao@xanga

I didn't know there were still drive-ins. What I do notice is that movies are coming out a lot faster in DVD than before. And no I wouldn't want them to serve beer.

  • Ju1cyXCouture@xanga

because getting a liquor license for a place that big would be a bitch and a half

  • pillowpixies@xanga

I wish that drive-ins were still around like they used to be. I know there are a few of them, but not nearly as many. They'd be so much funner than the typical movie theater we have now. ): Anyway, I'm glad they don't serve beer at movie theaters. Everyone would be half lit and chatting away in an hour tops.

  • derektb@xanga

Bring your own beer in dude. people sneak everything else in, why not beer? I've snuck a loaf of french bread into a movie. Sometimes we order a fountain coke from the theater, drink some of it, then empty our flask full of captain morgan into the drink. That's a handy way to do it since flasks are much easier to sneak in than cans or bottles of beer. It definitely would be nice if more movie theaters served beer, but until that happens you make your own solution.

    • About Me: I am a fishing fanatic. Love the outdoors. Going to the lake, camping anywhere, being in the mountains or just cruising through northern Ontario makes me feel great. I hate being indoors!!! Taking trips across the country has been fantastic. I like jumping in my car and driving 2000 miles in 35 hours or so just for the hell of it. I've been in all but 2 of Canada's provinces and all over the States. Must be the gypsy in me that makes me just pack up and go sometimes. Recently became physically disabled so I'm here in Xanga to keep busy with the time I have. Not being able to walk much gives me a lot of time to connect in here. I hope to have some fun and meet friends in my first blog site.
