  • Don't Like Star Wars, I Must Not Be Human

A couple of months ago, a few of my co-workers were talking about movies and I mentioned I had never seen Star Wars (the original 3), and that I wasn’t a fan of “galactic space battles”…

I shouldn’t have opened my mouth.

They berated me for days and kept asking how it was possible for someone to miss out on Star Wars.

So I figured the best way for them to stop bringing it up is to watch them as soon as possible.  I got them through Netflix that weekend and boy was that an experience.

I didn’t even like it.  Actually I fell asleep through the first time and had to watch it the next day.

The special effects (for its time) were great but everything else about the movies didn’t appeal to me.  There’s a reasons for it of course.

    1)    Movies involving space battles never seemed interesting to me.
    2)    None of my friends liked Star Wars, so naturally I never cared for them.
    3)    I was too involved in sports and other activities to even care about movies when Star Wars was popular.
    4)    I hated Star Trek (it was on all the time on UPN9) so thought Star Wars was the same thing.  (Bad move, I took some flak for that one as well)
    5)    Growing up there were commercials for everything with Darth Vader saying, “Luke I am your father”, so the scene was not as shocking to me as some said it would be.

The one good thing that came out of watching those movies are all the pop references to Star Wars.  Some of them finally make sense.  Maybe I should give it another try.  It might be more appealing after a second look at it.

I never thought Star Wars as a life changing experience but I got the sense from other people that it was?   How so?

No I have never watched Star Wars,

  • Aleesuhn_Muhree@xanga

Don't compare Star Wars and Star Trek.  Star Trek sucks.  I love Star wars and I'm a girl...I guess that makes me abnormal lol.  You should give it another try, maybe you'll like it

Episodes 4 5 6 are awesome.  Firefly(tv series) is also a must see!

Yeah, you should talk to my pastor. The guy has literally made reference to the Star Wars saga in his sermons. I kid you not.

Hey, some people like it; some people don't. Other people act like its the last book of the Bible.

Me? Eh. I can take it or leave it.

Although I have not seen all the Star Wars and Lord of the Ring movies....
STAR WARS > LORD OF THE RING

Meh, both movies will be a part of pop culture for eternity, but it's not on my top of watching. It's not in my genre anyway. Maybe if they took the battles and made it a lil more realistic (as in replaced the light sabers with swords or poles or something and they brought it all down to present day earth) then i can appreiciate the story behind all the action. I really do love action, but there's only so much I can take of sci-fi and fantasy.

    P.S. Star Treck *barf*

Silly you are for not liking Star Wars. I'm a Jedi. :]

  • SunMoonnStarz@xanga

I can take it or leave it with Star Wars. I like it, but I am not a HUGE fan like some. However, if you're not human perhaps you should watch Star Wars considering more than half of the characters are non-humans. ...but you would be human because you watched/like it and where would you be then?
&& personally, I kind of enjoy Star Trek.

  • gizzad@xanga

good luck guys, maybe next life. lol

  • puk_nthn_gai@xanga

    I can't stand Star Wars.
I LOVE purposely confusing Star Wars with Star Trek to appease my own humour. Other peoples' reactions never cease to make me chuckle.

  • TheSpaceBass@xanga

Star Wars is amazing. Plain and simple.

  • namburgers@xanga

George Lucas ruined Star Wars by releasing the prequels and he and Stephen Spielberg raped Indiana Jones Deliverance style. Reference: South Park Season 12 Episode 8.

  • howsojoe@xanga

I still haven't seen any of the star wars films. I get some serious flak from my friends over that one, I can tell you!

  • XxRobenXxAce@xanga

Star Wars never really appealed to me, I never really paid attention when forced to watch it. I get criticism for not watching, but yeah I'd rather go do something healthier than sitting for hours trying to catch up.

  • LucyWrites@xanga

I can take or leave star wars, although I do like it, but someone not liking Star Trek?? What the hell?

  • coolmonkey@xanga

Star Wars was one of those generational childhood things, like Ghostbusters or Transformers.  If you watch them now, they won't have the same magical effect on you.  I am one of those that regard people that have not yet watched Star Wars to be subhuman.

  • mayanao@xanga

Star Wars was boring to me as well. I saw up to 30ish minutes of the original and wanted to sleep. The only one I saw fully was the one with Natalie Portman.

  • john@xanga

    this post is unamerican.

  • midgetmachine@xanga

@coolmonkey@xanga - has a really good point. Its one of those things that really impacts you when you are younger.

I first watched Star Wars with my Dad when i was 6 or 7.  And I have been in love ever since.  To me, it is an escape, an epic lasting story of good and evil, of love, of family.  I have all 6 movies and enjoy them all at least once a year. I am, i suppose, what you could call a hardcore fan. I have lcd lightsabers, books (extended universe, anthologies, weapons, ships, etc), models, and I know minute details about the movies and the universe itself.  I really want to go to the gigantic star wars convention in LA but as of now, i sitll haven't been.

Star wars is one of the biggest loves of my life and really, it makes up a lot of who i am.  I make references to it constantly (which may be a little lame) and i love having in depth discussions about it. Alas, I have found few people that can keep up with me. Perhaps one day! Also, how can you not love star wars... Han solo is so incredibly sexy. and in 1,2, and 3, ewan is freaking fantastic.

And really, Star Wars and Trek can't be compared; they have totally different ideologies. As a die hard star wars fan, trek can suck it. However, i do have to say... the trailer for the new one actually looks pretty sweet.

I think it has more to do with the nostalgia that Episodes 4, 5, and 6 elicit.  The Star Wars series was the epitome of sci-fi films for an entire generation and thus the loyal following.  It's too bad Lucas screwed it all up with the prequels.

I think kids that watched the first Matrix during their formative years
would think that it was the best sci-fi movie of all time due to its interesting storyline, awesome
cinematography and ground breaking special effects.  However, the Matrix sequels really sucked so it won't have nearly the lasting effect that the Star Wars sequel has had.

Hell, I thought He-Man and Transformers were the most badass cartoons as a kid.  Unfortunately, I watched some episodes in college and they had definitely lost their magic.

  • persy@xanga

Meh, for me Star Wars was a good movie series, I liked it because it was long and had a semi intricate plot line.  Personally I thought that most of the graphics took away from the story and they should have focused more on the characters during some of the epic space battles..but whatever.  I have had a few pieces of Star Wars paraphernalia over my lifetime but I havn't gone out of my way to buy any.  Over all on a scale of Star Wars fanboyishness I would rate myself at about a 2 out of 10

    @midgetmachine@xanga -

@john@xanga - dude why would you pick on the foreign kid?  I'm like Fez from The 70's Show, when it comes to things like this haha

  • seventeenisntforever@xanga

Lol I've never seen it and you put it very well...space battles just don't do it for me. I don't really want to see it even though some of my friends threaten to disown me if I don't see them soon.

  • MissSmartHottie@xanga

I've never watched Stars Wars either, just cos I don't find it interesting. I think some ppl like it cos they just like the genre of the movie, but we don't all like the same thing!

So tell ur co-workers u don't like those movies, there's nothing bad with that, maybe u think some movies are the shit but they don't feel the same. Same thing.

    Peaceeeeeeeeee

  • tokyoexpressman@xanga

I played the collectible card game in middle school and I can still recite the movies line for line years after getting over my Star Wars addiction. I still love the original movies, but the hardcore diehard fanboy in me is quieter these days. Hasn't gone away though.
