  • Bought a Netbook, Now I Need It to Work

    Guest blog by Kash

I recently gave in and bought one of those, mini, semi-functional, slow, 9-inch plastic, bricks, aka Netbooks, so I wouldn’t have to abuse my new MacBook to and from work.

I bought the HP Mini 1000 and was planning to write about it and show that I’m not one of those jerky Apple lovers (I’m the only one at work with a Mac).

That went out the window after turning it on.

The screen wouldn’t light up after starting it. I could hear music playing, but nothing on the screen.

It was already messed up and I had it for about 25 minutes. Something in my head was screaming, "This is why you hate PC’s," but no, I planned to give it a chance and I’ll stick to it.

I contacted an HP rep, and after a long and boring chat, even though she was really nice, the conclusion was to have it replaced with a new and functioning device.

So, I have to wait another two weeks for a functional netbook. GRRRRR!! But it wasn’t all bad news.

There were a few things about it that stood out right away. First of all, the size was amazing. I was taken aback by how small it was. It made the MacBook look fat, but that was to be expected, it’s a netbook.

The glossy black casing and screen looked awesome and the keyboard was very comfortable to type on.

If it functions well, I will definitely recommend it to others because, by the looks of it, it’s a very sexy netbook.

I know there are some of you who have thought about getting one. What were some of your options? What’s your reason for getting one? If you’re not getting one, what kind of laptop or desktop do you currently have?

I think they're pretty cool. I would have gotten one of those MSI Wind netbooks and put OS X on it. I'm also a mac user though.

I'm a mac type person and don't think i could ever go back to PC's.

i have an Acer Aspire One. i didn't need it, but it was way discounted, and i figured that i could always sell it on eBay for a little profit.  however, the wife uses it and it has a good 6-hour battery life, so we've kept it around.

we plan to take it out and do some live video blogging sometime soon. yeah, we're nerds.

I've got me a 15 inch HP, but a smaller one would be nice to lug around.

I've been thinking about getting the acer or the asus one so I can carry it around with me when I'm out mountain biking in the bushes.  Couple it with a verizon or at&t card and I've got Internet access in the mountains for emergencies since I'm on call.  I've heard bad reviews about the old HP (esp battery life), but hopefully they have fixed up the problems on the new one.  It does look nice.

I use PC, Mac, Linux, Solaris, so it doesn't matter.  Sticking to 1 is so limiting and I laugh at people who are not versatile.

I'm a Mac girl myself, and I must say that all PC's can SUCK IT!

It seems like plenty of the commenters are Mac users...and I'm no exception. It's been so long since I've touched a PC that it takes me awhile to get familiarized again. I really don't have a need for a netbook, b/c I can just surf the internet w/ my iTouch. Granted, the small screen is a little annoying but it works.
