  • Guys Should NOT Pluck Their Eyebrows

This is a guest blog submitted by Chrischoi

Let's face it - for some reason guy's have horrible eyebrows.  When God designed our bodies, he decided that eyebrows would be funky looking on guys.  I mean, check out that actor Peter Gallagher:

Guys Should NOT Pluck Their Eyebrows
i kid you not, first image search result picture. Epic lulz.

But check that guy out - his eyebrows are like the costco of eyebrows.

Any event - there's a period of time in your life when you'll look in the mirror and actually wonder about them.  If you stare at them too long, they even start to look funny no?  Try it - go to your mirror, look at your eyebrows.  It just looks out of place - like you're head is a mister potatoe head doll and some 3 year old put the arm piece in the eye socket.

Which brings me to this - I know guys who pluck their eyebrows.  Now, back in early 2000, there was a name for this - metrosexuals.  But lately that word started to fall off our daily vocabulary just like how movies go to die on TBS.

But is it me - or is it just weird when your friend admits that he plucks his eyebrows.  For some reason, you pause when you hear that.  I mean, i'm not altogether sure what to think - do I think more highly of you?  Or do I think you're less of a man.

I know women like groomed guys, but just imagining you sitting in your bathroom, 4 inches from the mirror plucking away - it reminds me of Mr. Miagi (rest in peace) teaching karate kid Daniel Larusso to trim the bonsai tree with little itty bitty scissors.  First you pluck the eyebrow, next it's gonna be wax the leg, then paint the nail.  There's something emasculating about it.  It's all a stone's throw away.

But like I said - a lot of women like groomed men.  And i've heard countless times when people say "men should have eyebrows, not unibrows"  But as we get older - you gotta understand.  It's all about the unity thing.  For example - when a guy grows a little facial hair, the first thing other guys ask is "do you connect?" - that means, the stache connects with the beard along side the mouth - for some reason, that's like a huge genetic accomplishment if you have that - you're the envy of all men.

Also, we all tried to get a 6 pack, and we instead unified all of them to form one huge 1 pack - that's the other unifying principle.  So it connecting our eyebrows is, in ways, in our nature to want to do.

Bottomline - I'm torn - plucking eyebrows for guys - what do you think of it?

I'm not overly bothered by men with hairy eyebrows. I actually think overly groomed guys are kind of creepy.

That said, I believe that plucking a few stray hairs between your eyebrows is a far cry from painting your toenails. I mean, I see your point, but I think you're exaggerating. Being well groomed is not at all womanly.

Also, I know things happen, but I don't think that losing muscle tone and growing a unibrow are things anyone should aspire to as they age.

i don't really care that much, as long as it's not over-extensive plucking. too much would freak me out. plucking a few stray hairs? good for him! :)

There was a lovely joke about Peter's eyebrows in the OC. It had me in stitches laughing.

lol my guyfriend plucks his eyebrows - doesnt look too bad - at least its nicely groom -
i told him to pluck my* eyebrows LOL

  • ELIZerson@xanga

    It's not a big ordeal.
    Some guys do need it.
    Some guys don't.
It's kinda sketchy when guys who don't need it do it anyway...

whatever floats your boat, its not too different from shaving

  • s_h_a_sha@xanga

i do it for my brother...

  • squanto_07@xanga

my wife plucks mine, that did take a lot of convincing though.

  • princess_serenity07@xanga

as long as he doesn't pluck better than me, i'm good with his plucking. =D

  • Celestial_Abyss@xanga

I really don't see a problem with it.  My brother gets his waxed and if he didn't they would be way too overgrown.  Some guys need it, some don't.  If you're comfortable with the way your brows look then leave them alone, otherwise, a little touch up never hurt anyone.

It's okay for guys to pluck their eyebrows for a cleaning...like plucking STRAY hairs but once a guy plucks them to the point where the shape changes.. or to the point where half of his eyebrow is gone (trust me, i've had a friend who did that) THEN, you know that you should put down the tweezers/stop seeing your eyebrow pluckist(is that a word?) and let them grow back to their normal... beastliness

its not completely bizarre but constantly plucking and tweezing is pushing it a little bit.

  • joewheeler06@xanga

plucking a few to git rid of a unibrow is totally acceptable. but even for women, overdoing it is just pathetic and vein.

  • Kendrawrr@xanga

I don't mind it that much. I pluck/clean my BF's eyebrows. Not a big deal to me. Just to make sure he looks clean. Not like he likes it, but.. I find it normal.

  • tvPUFF@xanga

Even Peter Gallagher plucks his eyebrows. A lot of dudes with huge eyebrows do, and their eyebrows are still huge. Just watch the variation in their movies. Zachary Quinto is especially amusing week to week on heroes.

  • daryaaft@xanga

too much estrogen influencing us. we are required to look a certain way. some people think its great and thats wonderful but its getting to be a little scary when there is no physical difference between a man and woman. it doesn't even have to do with cleanliness. a manicure you can justify on the term of cleanliness. but uni-brows don't attract germs or anything. i, completely, agree that its all a stone's throw away. not that there is a way a man should act but there are certain ways a man should look. which i know probably sounds horrible to people who want gender roles to be turned into something completely different.

    okay, peace out!

lol Im a girl and have oscar eyebrows (hurhur), but cant figure out out how the hell to do my brows without me looking awkward.

  • MellowMelissa@xanga

Hey, all power to them if they wanna pluck their eyebrows.  Although I would just prefer a little grooming here and there.

  • haha_SxE@xanga

uhhh. Guys should be able to pluck their eyebrows.

I mean, why should only women be "socially permitted" to pluck their eyebrows and not men? That is extremely silly and I think kind of stupid to limit it to one gender. come on, does this really need to be asked and featured on xanga? ridiculous.

  • ARboiWundr23@xanga

Plucking eyebrows shouldn't be that difficult to understand.  Sure guys shouldn't go to overboard and go for a heavy arch.  I mean, we don't want to suffer the same affliction as Jake Gyllenhaal and his overly groomed brows.  For men, the more natural yet groomed look is the holy grail of eyebrows.

So why not embrace plucking the unwanted strays...?

  • Arabbella@xanga

Generally not, but seriously, look at Peter - he needs it.  some guys do.  As for standing a few inches from a mirror with tweezers - as a woman, I see myself do this all the time.  Why on earth would it bother me for a man to?
Now, what I would HATE to see is a man with the sculpted, shapely eyebrows of a woman.  Yucky.  No, men with too much bush or a uni brow absolutely should pluck, but still look manly.  Meaning, you need to make it look authentic - like you haven't been plucking, like the grow naturally that shape.  Just some thinning out.

  • makethemakersmile@xanga

i don't mind if guys do, a little bit, but i dont want to know about it. im not a fan of a really metro man. but i dont want him looking fresh out of the logging camp either.

  • artworkjanalee@xanga

    i love eyebrows...i love burt 'n ernie

  • LifeNeedsProtection@xanga

A nice trim is a necessity for some men...or their stray, hair could poke an eye out on someone.   And that goes for nose and ear hair too.  EW!
